Bandwidth Requirements
To use Virtual-Call, all you need is an internet connection (e.g. DSL, cable, Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G) and VoIP-capable devices (IP phones) or a softphone for PC or Mac.
Internet Speed — What Do You Need?
A single phone call over the internet requires approximately 100 kbit/s (both upload and download) for the duration of the connection when using the audio codecs G.711a* and G.711u. This ensures flawless, high-quality voice transmission. Insufficient bandwidth leads to dropouts and poor voice quality during calls.
For 3G connections, we recommend the audio codec G.729a, which requires only 32 kbit/s.
| Codec | Required Bandwidth | Call Quality |
| G.711a*, G.711u | 100 kbit/s | Excellent (equivalent to ISDN) |
| G.729a | 32 kbit/s | Good |
| *In Europe, only the G.711a codec is supported. | ||
