Regulatory Authority
Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications sector. It manages the national numbering plan and the allocation of phone numbers.
Planned Number Types
| Number Type | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Geographic numbers (01/02) | In preparation | London (020), Manchester, Birmingham and other cities planned |
| Non-geographic numbers (03) | Under review | National numbers without geographic tie |
| Toll-free numbers (0800/0808) | Under review | Availability is being evaluated |
| Mobile numbers | Not available | Porting and provisioning of mobile numbers is not offered |
Expected Requirements
The following requirements are expected for British phone numbers:
- Proof of UK address — Companies need a registered business address in the United Kingdom.
- Companies House registration — A valid Companies House registration number is required for businesses.
- Identity verification — ID card or passport of the authorized representative.
Compared to many other countries, UK requirements are relatively straightforward. Ofcom primarily requires that the number user is identifiable.
Porting
Number porting is well established in the UK and regulated by Ofcom. Details on the porting process through Virtual-Call will be announced at market launch.
Note: Porting of mobile numbers is not offered by Virtual-Call.
Special Notes
- British phone numbers use the format +44 followed by the area code (without leading 0) and the phone number.
- The UK emergency number is 999 (as well as 112). VoIP providers are not required to support emergency services — ensure alternative access is available.
- Ofcom requires compliance with the General Conditions of Entitlement framework for all number users.
